DJS THAT SUCK

DJing is more than just playing music—it’s an art form. Born in the discos of the 1970s and shaped by the raw energy of 1980s hip-hop, it has evolved into a refined craft of musical storytelling. While many can step behind the decks, only a few truly master the ability to guide a crowd through sound.

From the steady pulse of house and techno to the chaotic rhythms of jungle, from the MC-driven sounds of early UK garage and grime to the explosive drops of modern EDM, DJing has always been the backbone of dance culture. Throughout its history, visionary artists like Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox, Ellen Allien, Kevin Saunderson, Afrika Bambaataa, Goldie, Annie Mac, Aphex Twin, Slimzee, Total Freedom, Derrick May, Nina Kraviz, and DJ Rashad have pushed boundaries, redefining what’s possible across genres and generations.

Yet as EDM exploded globally in the 2000s, especially across massive festival stages in Europe and the United States, a more commercial version of DJing began to dominate. In many cases, the focus shifted away from creativity and technical skill toward instant gratification—predictable drops, simplified structures, and crowd-pleasing formulas designed for maximum hype rather than depth.

This shift has often come at the expense of the craft itself. The artistry of blending, risk-taking, and curating unique sonic journeys has been replaced, at times, by a performance style that prioritizes spectacle over substance. Meanwhile, countless underground DJs—those who continue to innovate, challenge audiences, and honor the roots of the culture—remain overlooked.

The future of DJing depends on rebalancing that spotlight. By elevating artists who push boundaries rather than follow formulas, the culture can return to what made it powerful in the first place: creativity, authenticity, and connection through sound.
